"Agust D" is a rearrangement of SUGA's name along with a nod to his hometown. "Agus" is Suga spelt backwards while "dT" stands for Daegu Town (his hometown/old band).
Min Yoongi (Korean: 민윤기; born March 9, 1993) goes by two stage names: SUGA for his group work with BTS, and Agust D for his solo releases. He is a rapper, record producer and songwriter. A 100% self-made artist.
Since 2016, he has been testing his artistic boundaries with releases under the name Agust D — “SUGA” spelled backward, with the letters “D” and “T” added to honor his birthplace of Daegu, South Korea.
In 2018, he was the first BTS member being promoted a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA) owing to his substantial musical creation and a certain level of revenue from songwriting credits. His music talents and achievements have been recognized.
Agust D combines rap, hip-hop, and trap elements, exploring themes of mental health and self-expression in music (Songs About Mental Health). His trilogy of Agust D (mixtape), D-2 (mixtape) and D-DAY (studio album) are known for powerful delivery and thought-provoking storytelling.
2023 is a remarkable year for Agust D with his first official album “D-DAY”, first documentary "SUGA: Road to D-DAY" and first world solo tour “SUGA | AGUST D TOUR 'D-DAY'” with 28 concert dates, covering U.S. and Asia, of a total attendance of 330,000.
In 2023, Agust D became the FIRST and ONLY Rapper on history to sell over 1 Million copies of an album on the day of release and the FIRST and ONLY Asian Act in History to top the Billboard Rap Songwriters Chart. His tour is the HIGHEST grossing concert tour by a K-soloist/ Asian rapper and he also held a record of the HIGHEST grossing arena concert by Asian rapper in US history (over $3 million in a single arena concert).
Undoubtedly, Agust D has proven that he is the Most Successful Asian Rapper.
Who can be like him? No one.
Born in 1996, Min Yoongi (a.k.a. Agust D/SUGA) learnt about MIDI at age of 13 after being inspired by hip-hop groups. Since then, he worked a part-time job at a record studio and was active under the name Gloss as an underground rapper. As part of the hip hop crew D-Town in 2010, he produced "518-062", a song commemorating the Gwangju Uprising (a democracy movement in Korea). He used music to express himself.
There were three categories for the auditions by Big Hit Entertainment: rap, dance and composition. Yoongi took auditions in rap and composition. After the auditions, Yoongi signed with the company and moved to Seoul to study as a high school student and be a trainee. As his family did not support his music career, Yoongi needed to work as a delivery man to pay high school fees and maintain his living, especially everything was expensive in Seoul.
In 2013, Yoongi debuted as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS. Besides being the lead rapper of the group, Yoongi also produced, wrote and composed many songs for the group. Therefore, apart from being a rapper, Yoongi is also a producer, a writer and a composer.
Yoongi introduced his alter ego "Agust D" in 2016. A darker and raw extension of himself that he hadn’t shared before. Agust D emerged as a standalone artist with his mixtape, where he looked inward and bared forth his battles with depression, fame, anxiety and poverty.
After four years, Yoongi focused more on talking about the present, comparing it to his last mixtape, which was more focused on telling the past.
Yoongi had overcome his struggles and addressed "liberation". This album features a diverse range of sounds and genres and he collaborated with the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and Woosung from The Rose for "Snooze".
